Traverse City, Mich.— An organization aimed at reducing Veteran suicides will receive the proceeds from this year’s T.C. Patriot Game. Student Senate leaders from T.C. Central and West high schools recently chose the organization 22 2 None to receive money made through the sale of commemorative shirts.

Now in its sixth year, the T.C. Patriot Game takes the annual football clash between the two schools and honors local active duty military, Veterans, first responders and those who have died in service to their country.

22 2 None is a new organization that works with a variety of resources to help Veterans transition out of the military in an effort to reduce suicides and attempted suicides. “I can think of three Veterans in the area that recently committed suicide,” says 22 2 None board member Ray McDaniel. “We are working to create a place where Veterans feel welcome and connected with other Veterans.”

The organization was named from statistics that show an average of 22 Veterans commit suicide every day in this country. McDaniel says they are excited not just about receiving funding for their work but also educating the public on the real concern about Veteran suicides. “To be recognized by the students as a worthy organization is awe-inspiring and helps to keep us motivated.”

Student senate members made the selection, in part, because of the collaboration 22 2 None does with Veteran support groups. They also commented on a bigger project that would hope to build transitional housing for Veterans and their families.

This year the T.C. Patriot Game will take place Friday, September 8th. Plans are still being formulated about this year’s game, but once again all area Veterans and first responders will be invited to attend the game at no charge and participate in a pre-game ceremony that honors their service.

Shirts will go on sale in August. Sponsors for this year’s game include area new car dealerships, East Traverse Catholic Federal Credit Union and the Les and the Anne Biderman Foundation, More information is available at the school’s athletic offices or by contacting the TC Patriot Game Director, Scott Herzberg at sherzberg@nmc.edu.
